Cistern Collection Systems, From Cloud to Spout
Downspout FiltersDownspout filters are the essential first filter that we install on every single job, on every downspout, to ensure that our pipes stay free flowing and the water in our tanks stays clean. They are installed in accessible, highly visible locations and are easy to clean. They work really well.

Tanks
Tanks are the fun, interesting part of rainwater collection. Tanks come in all shapes and sizes. We typically install above ground, plastic tanks because they are effective and cost effective. You can usually find an out of the way place to tuck a large cistern or two. The tank receives water from the conveyance lines, sends water out the overflow lines, houses the pump, and is where the distribution lines begin. There can be tank automatic back up options that live in the tank, and you can plumb them in different ways for all kinds of useful and interesting purposes.

Pumps
If you have electricity at or near your tank location, pumps are a really useful and integral part of the rain collection system. Rain pumps these days are very advanced, and provide water at 45PSI out the distribution lines. They do not need pressure tanks, as they sense the pressure in the distribution lines themselves and turn on when there is a drop in pressure, like when you turn on the hose.

Hydrants
Hydrants, or frost-free spigots, are where you access the water from your tank. They are distributed around your property where you may need the water. We install an average of 3 hydrants per rain system. We've installed as many as 22 on one project (17 acre farm). hydrantsEach one has a standard garden hose thread for you to connect a simple garden hose, y-splitter, a simple timer, etc. The whole point of installing distribution lines is that you never have to drag hose around or spend time running around your yard to turn water off or on. We Americans live hectic, busy lives, and if that is what is required of us in order to be successful gardeners, sadly, most of us will fail. Distribution lines and extra hydrants make it easy for us and set us up for success.

Rain Gardens
Rain gardens are concave basins where overflow water is sent. The water fills the basins and then has time to infiltrate down into the ground. This creates a moist plume of water radiating downwards and outwards from the basin, and it feeds plants, bushes and trees in the general area for months to come. Basins can be planted with native, wet meadow pollinator plants, and placed in between your fruit and nut trees for maximum effect. Even the basins have an overflow, though, and sometimes overflow to another basin or two before finally overflowing 'out' of the system to city storm water or to a stream.
